AI model is reading detection dogs’ tail movements with startling precision—outperforming human trainers by predicting when a dog has found a scent, even before it formally signals.
We develop AI to analyze animal behavior, emotions, and pain—advancing science to promote animal welfare, well-being, and health.
Tech4Animals is a scientific research lab at the Information Systems Department at the University of Haifa.
We explore the frontier where technology meets animal behavior.
We harness the power of data, AI, and behavioral science to improve animal welfare, promote health and well-being, and deepen our understanding of how animals feel, communicate, and interact with their world.
We reimagine human–animal relationships through innovation, empathy, and science.
Our models are used by animal professionals and commercial companies for applications of facial analysis. Try our models now!
A typical animal-centered data science pipeline has the following stages.
What stage are you at now?
Understanding your current phase helps us identify opportunities
to collaborate, share tools, or support your next steps.
Data Collection
We consult on optimizing data collection setups for automated analysis.
Data Anotation
We offer professional data annotation services, including behavior coding and facial expression coding with AnimalFACS certified experts.
Data Modeling & Analysis
We develop AI models for activity, gait, locomotion, facial expressions, body language recognition in various species.
Interpretation
We help with the preparation of technical reports and scientific papers.
Animal-centered AI refers to the development of artificial intelligence systems designed to promote welfare and well-being of animals—not just the humans who take care of them. It shifts the focus from using animals as data sources to understanding them as sentient individuals with affective states, preferences, and rights. This approach involves designing models and technologies that can interpret animal behavior, emotions, pain and health conditions in non-invasive ways. Ultimately, animal-centered AI aims to support better welfare, more ethical decision-making, and a deeper, more empathetic relationship between humans and animals.
We study companion animals, farm animals, zoo and wild animals and even insects. We have specifically addressed cats, dogs, horses, rabbits, cows, sheep, wolves, racoons, hamsters, birds, beetles and larvae. We are always excited to collaborate on new species with you!
We collaborate with researchers, veterinary hospitals, NGOs, shelters, working dogs organizations, farms and commercial companies – please use the form to get in touch with us, and we will get back to you shortly to hear about your projects and ideas!
Yes, our tools are openly available for scientific research purposes. For commercial purposes, please contact us for terms of use.
We appreciate your donations, which will be used solely for creating animal-centered AI for deciphering animal emotions, promoting animal welfare in shelters, farms or any other purpose of your choice. Please get in touch with us for more details.
We are always looking for talented AI researchers, web developers and data scientists. To discuss the options for an internship, please get in touch with us.
We are always looking for talented PhD students with a strong background in computer vision and machine learning. If you are passionate about AI for good and animals and have strong technical background, please send your CV to annazam@gmail.com to be considered for a PhD position at the lab.
